Prelude: I sit in the water of a cool stream in the Spanish Pyrenees gazing at the rocks below my feet.  Reflecting on the mingling of events and beauty that compose all things.  My mind wanders across the waters to another time in my life and the episodes of beauty and the awareness that life is an adventure, not an obligation. Life is full of infinite small doors behind which are great rooms and moments.  The large doors which the masses seek are corrals behind cattle shoots and offer comfort only to those seeking the average.  This is a book about small doors I have entered wherein I have found worlds worth entering.

On an off day in Seattle, the sky was free of gray and the trilling voices of Africa filled the air with jubilation and the caftans spun. The color blue that trailed in their wake held hands with the hot New Mexico sky of my childhood and the same sun baked sky in Eritrea. It was a moment of family, of celebration. A young man, Simon from Eritrea, had graduated college in America because his parents with or without fear embraced the possibility of what lay beyond a door; the ability to flow where the streams of their dreams could lead them.  In each stream each stone tells a story and each gust of wind carries on it the scent of past and current life, emotions and experience. They took a chance and walked through the portal of possibility. We had been long-time friends of the family and this was a day of celebration. Every member of the invited, honored their son, Simon by dancing with him, The expression of joy swirled in abandon as we each danced circles one by one to express our love. The rhythm: pure Africa. The exchange: pure human. It was a gift to me that was beyond afar. As the caftans waved against the sky the movement of memories, of the magic of this day and of days gone by began to dance with me and I was a child who could not catch his breath laughing in the spinning world beneath a turquoise sky.
